Cycling Tips and Training

Everyone needs a few reminders of safe riding techniques from time to time, even the best of us.  RIO wants all cyclists, especially its members, to pedal safely.  Three principles stand out: Honor the Rules of the Road, Be Seen, and Ride Predictably.  See below for tips that align with these principles.

Besides riding safely, many cyclists desire to improve their strength, endurance, and fitness on the bike.  We will add additional training information on this page soon, with the hope you will find it of value.

Safe Riding

Honor the rules of the Road!

  • The same laws that apply to motorists apply to cyclists

  • Ride in the same direction as traffic

  • Use the lane furthest to the right that heads in the direction that you are traveling unless turning

  • Slower moving cyclists stay to the right (let faster riders pass)

  • Obey all traffic controls including stop signs, lights, and lane markings

  • Always use hand signals to indicate your intention to stop or turn to motorists and cyclists

Be Seen!

  • Wear brightly colored clothing at all times

  • At night, use bright LED lights: solid and strobing white lights on the front and strobing red on the rear. Also use reflective tape or clothing

  • Make eye contact with motorists to confirm they know you are there

Ride Predictably!

  • Ride in a straight line and don't swerve in the road or between parked cars

  • Check for oncoming traffic before entering any street or intersection

  • Anticipate hazards and adjust position in traffic accordingly

  • Wrap your thumbs around the handlebar, instead of laying them across the top (this can keep you from going down when you hit a bump)

  • No aero riding on busy streets - save it for when you're on a smooth road with few cars

Training

We all desire to ride stronger and longer. Nothing feels better than finishing strong on that last big ride. Here are some helpful links to training tips.

Winter Training

Many of our members use the cold winter months to do Time Trial Classes. Our own Roy Sturm teaches an awesome one, contact him for details.
